(Original Caption) 9/4/1961-New York, NY-ORIGINAL CAPTION: Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle lost ground in their efforts to equal or surpass Babe Ruth's home run record. Mantle made a brief defensive appearance, but never batted. Maris, who played, had his woes and went 0-for-8. This photo series shows Maris muttering as he pops up to the third baseman: spinning away from a tight pitch; dropping his bat on a bunt; and flipping his batting helmet away in disgust after grounding out. The Yankees still swept the doubleheader, 8-5 and 3-2.
