Description
'Revised-and Corrected', 1868. During the General Election of 1868, the question of the enfranchisement of women came to fore. Several bold females, like the one shown in this cartoon, had sent in a claim to vote. Their argument was that they were ratepayers and, in fact, some women had been included on the list of persons entitled to vote. However, the Revising Barrister at Manchester dismissed their claims. As usual, Punch portrays the lady making her claim to vote as a skinny spinster of uncertain age, thus making the caption 'Get thee to a nursery' even more unkind. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 26, 1868. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
