Artist's Description
NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 25: American record producer, civil rights activist, and music critic John Hammond (John Henry Hammond II) poses for a portrait in his offices at Columbia Records on November 25, 1975 in New York City, New York. For decades, as a producer and music scout, John Hammond was pivotal in launching and helping to shape the careers of many major American musicians, from Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, and Count Basie to Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Springsteen, as well as reviving the legacies of blues musician Robert Johnson and blues singer Bessie Smith. John Hammond is father of the contemporary American blues musician John Paul Hammond (John Hammond, Jr.) (Photo by David Gahr/Getty Images)
