Description
(Original Caption) 5/12/1944-NV- Working in the shimmering heat, rail layers are shown laying down track in Nevada as the Central Pacific forces worked eastward. A telegraph line kept pace with the track, which was only half as long and less than half as heavy as that in general use today. A picked gang of Irish rail-layers, backed by a small army of trackmen, set an all-time record of ten miles of track, working from sunrise to sunset on April Day in 1869.
