Description
Queen Mary surprising Courtenay and the Princess Elizabeth, 1553-1555 (1840). During Mary's reign her half-sister Elizabeth came under suspicion of plotting against her and desiring a return to Protestantism in England. The suspicions were encouraged by Mary's close confidant, Simon Renard, the Ambassador of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, depicted here lurking outside the door behind the Queen. A print from The Tower of London a Historical Romance, by William Harrison Ainsworth. (London, 1840). (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
