Artist's Description

(Original Caption) Washington health officers and fire department officials are shown watching the home of Eph De Voe go up in flames. It was located on Hickey Lane. Everything inside the house, where sixteen persons were living, was destroyed. It was decided to burn the building because it was found to be impossible to fumigate following discovery that DeVoe had smallpox. Those who lived in the house are now quarantined.
