Artist's Description

(Original Caption) Russian was translated into English by an electronic "brain" today (January 8) for the first time, in a demonstration of International Business Machine's Type 701 Electronic Data Processing Machine.Brief statements about politics, law, mathematics, chemistry, etc., were submitted in Russian by linguists of the Georgetown University Institute of Languages and Linguistics to the famous IBM 701 computer, and within seconds, , the giant computer turned the sentences into easily readable English. Pictured here is a sample punch card with the Russian letters on top; the computer then translated the letters: "The quality of coal is determined by calory content".
