Description
Porphyry ewer, 1468-1491, (1881). Etching of a lidded ewer made in Mechelen, Flanders, by Seger van Steynemoelen, mid-late 15th century. This ewer is made of silver mounts, incorporating an ancient, probably Roman, green porphyry vase dating from between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The spout is in the form of a gaping dragon. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]. Artist R I Stevenson. (Photo by The Print Collector via Getty Images)
