Description
Plains of Waterloo', mid 19th century. Monuments on the site of the Battle of Waterloo, fought on 8 June 1815 between Napoleon's forces and a coaltion of the British under the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under Field Marshal Blücher. The Hanoverian Monument (left), was erected in memory of the King's German Legion, a British military unit raised in 1803 on the order of King George III. The Gordon Monument, (centre), was erected in memory of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon (1786-1815), Aide de Camp to the Duke of Wellington, who was mortally wounded at the very end of the battle. The Lion's Mound, (right), marks the place where William II of the Netherlands was knocked from his horse by a musket ball to the shoulder. Artist Robert Brandard.
