(Original Caption) Alaska: Los Angeles Physician Fights Alaskan Small Pox Epidemic Single-Handed. Dr. L. E. Bensom, of Los Angeles, California, on a vacation in Alaska, mushed into a native village at the close of a hard day on the trail, and found himself with seventy patients, all suffering from smallpox, on his hands. There were 100 persons in the village with no medical facilities, and the nearest available doctor a hundred miles away. Dr. Bensom took charge of the situation, and lost only one patient by death. Dr. Bensom is shown in the above photo with dog team and native helpers.
