1856: The maiden voyage of the Royal British and North American Mailpacket Company's new paddle steamer, the Persia. Built by Robert Napier and Sons in Glasgow in 1855, she crossed the Atlantic in 1856 and arrived in New York to win the coveted Blue Riband for Cunard. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
