Description
(Original Caption) The Amazons were a mythical race of women to whom poetry and legend assign different dwelling places. They were said to have reduced their men to servitude and to have taken warfare and government into their own bands. Homer speaks of them in the Iliad as the unsexed Amazons, and other authors name them among the allies of the Trojans and make Achilles kill their queen, Penthesilea. In later poets, we read of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, as in the Theseide of Boccaccio and the Knight's Tale of Chaucer.
