Description
Looking southwest from an elevated position, high on a hill top down into Wadi al-Suraysir which is known as the Valley of the Tombs in the Western Necropolis, of Palmyra, Syria. In the middle of the frame there are many crumbling ruined Tower Tombs clustered together. The largest of these is the Tower of Elahbel (near the centre of the image). To the right of it is distinctive tapered form of the Tower Tomb of Atenatan, built in 9 BC, it was the earliest dated tower tomb in Palmyra.
Both of these tombs no long exist as they were reduced to rubble by the Islamic State (IS, ISIL, ISIS) at sometime between August 27, 2015 and September 2, 2015.
The desert is bathed in an ethereal diffused golden natural light caused by a sandstorm sweeping across this remote desert location.
