New London and Norwich', 1874. 'Uncas Monument; Norwich; Groton Monument; New London; Under the Elms, Norwich; On the Quinebaug; Tunnel at Norwich', Connecticut, USA. The Uncas Monument was dedicated in 1842 to Uncas: '...a great sachem [chief] of the Pequots, but he became afterward, by revolt and secession, the most renowned leader of the Mohegans for fifty years, during which period he elevated them in point of influence, and held them, in spite of many wars with other tribes, to peaceful relations with the colonists'. The Groton Monument, erected in 1830, was dedicated to the defenders who fell at Fort Griswold during the Battle of Groton Heights on 6 September 1781.
