Description
(Original Caption) Military telegraph battery wagon in front of Petersburg, Sept. 1864. The telegraph line could be put up at the rate of two miles an hour, making it possible for the commanding general to be in direct communication with all the corps. The army of the Potomac was the first to demonstrate the advantages of the field telegraph for military operations.
