Description
Microscopic Anatomy (Histology), SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM and GOBLET CELLS, SMALL INTESTINE (Ileum), 250X. Shows: columnar absorptive cells, goblet cells(mucus-secreting, two cells), striated border (microvilli), basement membrane and underlying supportive connective tissue. Desmosomes are also visible--the dark (but short) structures at the very apical end of the columnar cells, underneath the striated border. Desmosomes are best seen with the electron microscope--they help weld the adjacent cells to one another.
