Artist's Description
(Original Caption) 1/15/50-Elbe, Washington: Robert Lutkens (left) and Ralph Wiegard (right) stand by to let the owner of this giant Douglas fir tree, Charles Lutkens (foreground), Robert's father, get a good look at their two-hour job. It took them that long to down the tree with a power-driven chainsaw, near Elbe. The tree measured 14 feet across at the base and 175 feet high. According to those who know about such things, the tree started growing before Columbus discovered America. That's a lotta lumber, lads.
