(Original Caption) 3/1/1945-Iwo Jima, Japan: Ready to Advance To Hell. Compressing themselves into the heavy volcanic sand of the beach along the Southeastern coast of Iwo Jima, US Marines offer the smallest possible target to deadly Japanese fire as they "shoot it out" waiting to advance. From the grotesque, sprawled appearance of some of those in the sand who will not rise again, the price of this bloodiest campaign in the history of the leatherneck US Marines is appalling. Even under fire, men unload larger craft in the background. Mt. Suribachi can be seen at to right.
