(Original Caption) Darlington, England: Centenary year of British railways, 1825-1925. During the month of July is being celebrated the centenary of British railways, the first railway, the Darlington-Stockton, have been opened in 1825. The photo shows locomotive number one built by George Stephenson, photographed at Darlington awaiting the centenary exhibition. As can be seen the driver's seat was at the side of the boiler, and he had to ring a bell as a warning of his approach.
