Artist's Description
(Original Caption) Gem of an Idea. Schenectady, New York: Eyeing a diamond pointed tool is Dr. H. Tracy Hall of the General Electric Research Laboratory, Schenectady. He has devised a way of mounting diamonds on the surface of a tool tip rather than burying most of the stone in the metal. By bonding the diamond to the surface of the metal, using titanium hydride and silver-copper solder, he exposes most of the stone. Formerly, up to 90% of the gem was set in a deep cavity. Besides allowing the use of much smaller stones in industrial tools, the new mounting system is stronger and is better for the diamond, since heat which might cause it to fracture is conducted away more easily.
