Artist's Description
'Mammon's Rents!', 1883. A rent collector has come to collect the week's payment from one of London's poorest families. The well-fed and well-clothed appearance of the collector is in stark contrast to the terrible poverty of the family. The condition of the poor was a matter of great concern during the mid and late-Victorian period. This cartoon was prompted by the publication of Andrew Mearns' The Bitter Cry of Outcast London. An inquiry into the condition of the abject poor. This had been published by the London City Mission, an interdenominational urban missionary organisation. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 10, 1883. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
