Description
President Lincoln visits General George B. McClellan and his staff at his camp near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on October 3, 1862, a few weeks after the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln was there to try to persuade McClellan to move his troops and attack Lee's army while he had the advantage, but McClellan declined to attack. This led to his dismissal as commander of the Army of the Potomac a few days later. Pictured (L-R) are: Col. D.B. Sackett, Capt. G. Monteith, Lt. Col. N.B. Sweitzer, Gen. G.W. Morell, Col. A.S. Webb, Gen. McClellan, Scout Adams, Dr. Jonathan Letterman, unidentified officer, Pres. Lincoln, Col. H.J. Hunt, Gen. F.J. Porter, unidentified officer, Col. F.T. Locke, Gen. A.A. Humphreys, and Capt. George Armstrong Custer. | Location: Near Sharpsburg, Maryland, Confederate States of America.
