Artist's Description

Lieutenant William B Cushing's attack on the 'Albemarle', 1864 (c1880). The 'Albemarle' was a Confederate ironclad warship that operated in the coastal waters of North Carolina during the American Civil War. In 1864 she controlled the approaches to Plymouth, North Carolina on the Roanoke River until she was sunk by Cushing in a daring night attack using a small steam launch armed with a torpedo. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume III, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880. (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
