(Original Caption) Austin, Texas: Brinkmanship. Demonstrating the power of karate, expert Jhoon Rhee uses only his hand to shatter a brick in Austin, Texas. Although deemed too ferocious for the U. S. Armed Forces, karate is being demonstrated by Rhee, a Korean, at the University of Texas in Austin. Karate, which originated in India, shares the popularity of Judo in Japan. Where the aim of Judo is to throw an opponent to the floor without necessarily injuring him, Karate enables the practitioner to kill or injure an adversary by striking him at any of 26 vital spots, usually with the edge of the hand of balled fist.
