Artist's Description

'Justice to Ireland', 1880. Britannia comforts a tearful Hibernia. To the right of the cartoon, an Irish family is on the brink of starvation whilst, in the background, a march takes place. This relates to a scarcity of food in Ireland at the beginning of the year. Charles Parnell made a visit to New York at that time where he said that the only help that Ireland needed was to free herself from British landlords and the land rental system which was responsible for bringing such poverty. There was much agitation in Ireland at the time against the payment of rent, whilst relief funds collected by such people as the Lord Mayor of Dublin and the Duchess of Marlborough were used to prevent a real famine. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 17, 1880. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
