John Lubbock, lst Baron Avebury, English banker, scientist and Liberal politician, 1884. Lubbock (1834-1913) at a desk by the window in his library working with a binocular microscope. His Prehistoric Times, first published in 1865, was one of the most influential archaeological books of the 19th century. In it Lubbock coined the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic for the first time.
