Artist's Description
James Carey, Irish Republican and informer, 1883. He swears in his victims; Look, the man in the grey suit; He informs; as crown witness. Carey (1845-1883) was a leading member of the Republican group known as 'the Invincibles', which carried out the assassination of Thomas Henry Burke, the Under-Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, and Chief Secretary Lord Frederick Cavendish in Dublin's Phoenix Park on 6 May 1882. He was arrested in January 1883 and turned queen's evidence, leading to the hanging of five of his former associates. He was smuggled out of the country under an assumed name, bound for South Africa, but his real identity was betrayed and he was murdered by Patrick O'Donnell, an Irish bricklayer, on board a ship sailing from Cape Town to Natal, on 29 July 1883.
