Description
(Original Caption) It looks like this was the year Dodger fans were talking about when they said "Wait 'till next year". The powerful New York Yankees were expected to sweep the 1947 World Series from the Brooklyn Dodgers, but it was a fight all the way and sports fans were kept on tenterhooks until the very last game. Won by the Yankees. Among the many excellent photos made during the series is this one by Eddie Jerry, Acme Staff photographer. Little Phil Rizzuto, Yankee shortstop, flies off his feet as Jackie Robinson, Dodger first baseman and the first Negro to play in big league baseball, slides into second in the first inning of the sixth game at the Yankee Stadium. With the bases loaded and none out, Dixie Walker grounded to Rizzuto who stepped on second to force Robinson and then threw to first to double Walker. Rizzuto was momentarily stunned but he continued the game.
