Description
Illustrations of Wernher's Marienleben. Left side: Jacob's dream of the sky ladder. Right side: Birth of Christ. Wernher (priest Wernher; second half of the 12th century) Augsburg clergyman, who in 1172 commissioned the manegold of St. Ulrich and Afra (in Augsburg) the life of Mary "Driu liet von der maget" ("Three books from the Virgin Mary “) wrote. The apocryphal writings of Pseudo-Matthew, which dealt with Mary's childhood, served as his source. Due to its formal perfection and depth of feeling, the work is considered one of the most beautiful creations of the German Marian poetry. Facsimile after an original medieval parchment (12th century) in the Berlin State Library, Germany. Chromolithograph, published in 1897.
