(Original Caption) 7/8/1853- Yedo, Japan: When US Naval forces sailed to Tokyo in 1853. Here is a rendition of the entry of Commodore Matthew Perry into the harbor at Yedo, Japan.All of Perry's ships were wooden, five steam side-wheel warships and six sailing vessels. His flagship was the Mississippi, a sidewheel steamer of 1,700 tons, with a crew of 75 and mounting ten guns. The largest ship of the fleet was the Vermont, a 75 gun ship of 3,000 tons. The total complement was of 3,470 officers and men and 700 marines. The fleet mounted a total of 272 guns. The expedition, ordered by President Fillmore, opened the Kingdom for the first time to Western Civilization. SEE NOTE
