Artist's Description

(Original Caption) Guaiacum and venereal infection treatment is shown here. Drinking the concoction of the tree relieved the weak limbs weighted down by this disease. Guaiacum or lignum vitae was brought by Spanish sailors from the New World to Europe in 1508 where it found use as a specific against syphilis. The decoction of the wood is shown here, being processed to be served warm. At left, the patient drinks the medicine with the physician standing by. In the vignette above the candle, is shown the scene of the feast and retirement that led to the infection.
