Artist's Description

'His Eminence Cardinal Manning', 1889. After graduating from Oxford, Henry Edward Manning (1809-1892) was ordained as an Anglican priest and in 1840 was appointed archdeacon of Chichester. In 1851 he joined the Roman Catholic church. In 1865 he became Archbishop of Westminster and in 1875 he was named Cardinal.
