Description
3rd September 1955: Sheep on the island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides move down the road watched in the background by crofters. Lewis and Harris are connected by an isthmus and considered to be a single island measuring 2,134 square kilometres, which makes it the largest of the Western Isles. The island is 39 miles away from the Scottish mainland and separated by North Minch which may be crossed by ferry. Islanders mainly live by crofting and fishing although the hand-woven tweed made by Harris residents is renowned for its quality and is exported to customers all over the world.
