With apologies to CSN for the title, but I was going for the alliteration. The best lesson I ever had in photography was from an instructor named P.J., who taught us to look for light subjects against a dark background. For this whole series of pictures that I took around one of my sister's hummingbird feeders, I used an ambient exposure that let the sunlit background go a little dark (1/180, iso 200, f16), and then put a lot of light on the hummers.
