(Original Caption) Shirley A. Haugan, Tex A. Brown, Betty J. Hanson, Kathryn K. Humphreys, Mary C. Canavan, Gwendolyn E. Cowart, and Virginia A. Whisonant are WASPs on the flight line at New Castle Army Air Base, near Wilmington, Delaware. They are assigned to the 2nd Ferrying Group, Ferrying Division, ATC to ferry planes. One of several service pilot operations, the WASPs perform for other AAF Commands and Continental Air Forces. They tow targets for the Anti-Aircrafts Artillery and for AAF Flexible gunners, act as pilots for bombardiers and navigators in training, do engineering flying, courier work, and teach instrument flying garments. There are about 1000 WASPs in training and operations.
