Artist's Description

(Original Caption) 9/16/1930-Dr. Auguste Piccard, famed German scientist, hopes to take off soon in the biggest balloon ever built. He hopes to fly 6 1/2 miles to make scientific observations in the atmosphere. The "basket" is a hollow aluminum ball, seven feet in diameter, to withstand the climactic conditions of the rarefied atmosphere. Photo taken at Prof. Piccard's laboratory at Augsburg, Germany, shows Prof. Piccard (center-wearing glasses) before the aluminum "basket" of the ballon with his co-helpers.
