Artist's Description

(Original Caption) 1861- Washington, DC: Facsimile of the handwritten first draft of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Written by Abolitionist Julia Ward Howe and set to the hymn of "Glory Glory, Hallelujah" attributed to William Steffe. Submitted to the Treasury building in November 1861 and dedicated to Charlotte B. Whipple.
