Description
Felix Harbour', 1834. John Ross's ship, the 'Victory', with all flags flying, trapped in the ice in Felix Harbour on the eastern tip of Boothia Felix in Nunavut's northern Canadian Arctic, Christmas Day 1829. 'The brilliancy of Venus [top left] was a spectacle which was naturally contemplated as in harmony with the rest of the day.' British Royal Navy Officer John Ross (1777-1856) and his nephew James Clark Ross spent four winters trapped in the Arctic ice on an expedition to find the elusive Northwest Passage. John Ross was knighted in 1834 following his return to England. [Captain J Ross, London, 1834] Artist William Say. (Photo by Print Collector/Getty Images)
