(Original Caption) 4/22/55-Lititz, Pennsylvania: A farmer surveys the mound of farm chemicals he uses in the course of an average year at his 78-acre farm in Lititz, Pennsylvania. He has 26 cows, 8 steers, 6 heifers, 1,500 chickens and he grows corn, wheat, hay, tobacco and potatoes. Synthetic fertilizers enrich soil and boost crop output by replenishing soil with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Various insecticides, including DDT, are powerful medical, agricultural weapons. They destroy disease-bearing pests and thus raise farm output.
