Description
(Original Caption) 1963-Washington, D.C.: Rachel Carson stirred up a roaring national controversy with her last book, "Silent Spring." Now living quietly in a suburban community near Washington, D.C., Miss Carson was born in Springdale, Pa. She first burst upon public notice in 1951 with "The Sea Around Us," which became a best seller. The success enabled Miss Carson, shown here seated at her typewriter, to leave her government job as an aquatic biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
