Artist's Description
(Original Caption) 7/12/1952- Washington, DC- Captain Hyman G. Rickover, director of the Nuclear Power Division of the Navy's Bureau of Ships, explains the operation of an engine on a model of the first atomic-powered submarine. Briefly: heat is created in the nuclear reactor by the fission of uranium. This heat is transferred to a steam generator which provides the steam to drive a turbine, from which, in turn, the power is transmitted to drive the propellers.
