Artist's Description
Egyptian Bonds, 1882. John Bull represents the British Navy, and is tied to a small French sailor. At the right of the cartoon is Arabi Pasha who was generally viewed as the representative of a national movement in Egypt. Others believed him simply to be a rebel against the Khedive and the Sultan. Lord Granville, the Liberal Foreign Secretary is carrying Turkey on his back. This relates to a conference held at Constantinople to consider the situation in Egypt. Britain and France demanded that Arabi be removed from Egypt but this proved fruitless. A Turkish mission arrived at Alexandria, but on the 11th June there was a riot at Alexandria when Europeans were attacked. Lord Granville had to admit that Arabi was in control. However, after a conference with Dervish Pasha of Turkey, Arabi conceded that he would obey the Khedive in maintaining order. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 8, 1882.
