(Original Caption) 2/19/1932- The rocket ready for flight. G. Edward Pendray (L), Vice president of the American Interplanetary Society, and Franklin Pierce, rocket engineer, testing the balance of the society's rocket. The fuels liquid oxygen and gasoline, are contained in the pipe-like tanks running back to the fins. The combustion chamber, where the fuels are exploded for driving power, are in the head, and a parachute, automatically operated, is contained in the cone-shaped tip to bring the rocket gently back to earth.
