Description
Edmund Calamy the Elder, 17th century English Presbyterian church leader, (early 19th century). Of Huguenot descent, Calamy (1600-1666) was elected to the curacy of the Church of St Mary Aldermanbury in London in 1639. He was prominent in defending the Presbyterian cause at the opening of the Long Parliament in 1640. He became one of Charles II's chaplains after the Restoration, of which he had been an advocate, but was dismissed from the Church for nonconformity in 1662 after the passing of the Act of Uniformity. Calamy was greatly affected by the devastation caused by the Great Fire of London in 1666 and died shortly afterwards. (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
