Artist's Description

(Original Caption) May Be Canonized. Frankfurt: Edith Stein, born in 1891 to a middle-class Jewish family in Breslau, Germany, is likely to be canonized by the Catholic Church next year, Miss Stein converted to Catholicism in 1922, after a decade of philosophical studies. She later became a Carmelite nun and worked under the name of Sister Teresia Benedicta a Cruce. During World War II she was arrested by the Nazis for having Jewish blood and sent to Auschwitz, where she died in a gas chamber.
