(Original Caption) 4/9/1969-Houston, Texas- The first total replacement of a human heart by a mechanical device,known as an Orthotopic Cardiac Prosthesis, was placed in 47-year-old Haskell Karp of Skokie,IL, 4/4, by Dr.Denton A.Cooley & Dr. Domingo Liotta.The device is in two hearts. Orthotopic Cardiac Prosthesis is a Dacron & Silastic four-chambered apparatus which is attached via tubes to a nearby console which acts as the power source. Karp lived for three days with the artificial heart.
