(Original Caption) Dr. Willard F. Libby, 45, Professor of Chemistry in the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago, was appointed to the Atomic Energy Commission to succeed Dr. Henry D. Smyth, who has resigned. The appointment was announced at President Eisenhower's Summer White House in Denver, September 15. Here, Dr. Libby is shown at his work checking a vacuum line for distilling carbon.
