Description
Dr Johnson and Boswell in Fleet Street, (1884). Boswell: I talked of the cheerfulness of Fleet Street, owing to the constant quick succession of people which we perceive passing through it. Johnson: Why, Sir, Fleet Street has a very animated appearance; but I think the full tide of human existence is at Charing Cross. English man of letters Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) and his Scottish friend and biographer James Boswell (1740-1795) passing Ludgate, one of the old gates into the City of London. A print from a supplement to The Graphic, published for the Johnson Centenary, (13 December 1884). Hand-coloured later. (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
