Description
(Original Caption) The inventor of the first successful heart lung machine, Dr. John H. Gibbon, Jr., examines a newly developed apparatus for "cleaning" stored blood so that it may be used for machine priming and transfusion during open-heart surgery. Until now, banked blood has been unusable for this purpose. The disposable, sterile plastic bag contains specially-prepared resin pellets which remove undesirable elements by interacting chemically with the banked blood as it flows through the apparatus. Dr. Gibbon, heads the Department of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College.
