Artist's Description

The unnamed hero of Pearl Harbor, a messman with the United States Fleet, has been identified as Dorie Miller of Waco, Texas, seen here wearing the cross he received at a ceremony. When Japanese planes bombed his ship in Pearl Harbor, Miller manned a machine gun, although he had received no training in the use of the weapon. He stuck to his post until his dying Captain ordered all hands to quit the stricken vessel.(Photo by Bettmann Archive/Getty Images)
